
The Stone of Scone, or the Stone of Future, is a 152kg block of crimson sandstone that will have been positioned below the 700-year-old coronation chair yesterday. Traditionally it was used through the coronations of Scottish monarchs, after which the coronations of the monarchs of England, Nice Britain and the UK.
My nice uncle’s storage
The stone is nicely travelled — Westminster Abbey, Scone Abbey, Arbroath Abbey, and extra lately, Edinburgh Fort. And in 1950, it travelled to my nice uncle’s storage in Glasgow, having been stolen from Westminster Abbey by 4 Scottish college students, who wished to make a press release about Scottish nationalism. As my nice uncle was a renown (and from reminiscence, very vocal) member of the Scottish Covenant Affiliation, who have been campaigning for a Scottish Parliament, they handed the stone to him, which is the way it ended up skulking in his storage.
As a baby, I used to like visiting my family members and their garages in Scotland in June, through the raspberry harvest. Raspberries have been — and nonetheless are — one among my favorite fruits. Cranachan is the Scottish model of Eton mess, initially made to rejoice the harvest. The phrase cranachan means ‘churn’ in Gaelic. The almonds and chocolate are my addition, and never a part of the unique recipe. Apparently going rogue runs within the household!
Recipe for Cranachan (serves 4)
- 2 tablespoons oats
- 1 tablespoon almonds, chopped
- 300g raspberries, crushed
- 350ml double cream
- 2 tablespoons honey (heather honey if attainable)
- 2 tablespoons whiskey
- 2 squares darkish chocolate (minimal 70%), grated
