Residence by Emerson Bailey | A Dwelling of Previous and Current

Whereas in Copenhagen, I additionally visited ‘Residence’, an exhibition by Emerson Bailey, a Montana primarily based design studio and gallery based by Susan Weiss with showrooms within the US and Sweden. Set inside a historic condo close to Rosenborg Fort Gardens, the exhibition felt like moving into somebody’s dwelling.

The philosophy of Emerson Bailey is rooted within the perception that historic design needs to be faraway from its pedestal and lived with. By pairing the previous with the modern, a mid-century chair, with an vintage aspect desk and modern desk lamp, a rigidity is established that invitations a brand new method to every work, leveraging distinction as depth, not battle. The main target turns into cohesion: discovering a shared language in materials, colour palette, or proportion that permits outdated and new to coexist in steadiness. ‘Residence’ embodies this sentiment, mixing many years of design to create one thing enduring and contemporary, and difficult

A 5 room Residence

In Residence, Emerson Bailey created 5 rooms, a lobby, work room, front room, eating room, and bed room every designed to inform a narrative. The exhibition explored the connection between historic and modern design, rooted in a Scandinavian method however open to world influences. Guests had been invited to see how completely different eras can exist collectively, linked by way of materials, proportion, and colour.
Somewhat than organizing the rooms by time interval or type, every house felt private and layered. From a Swedish Rococo secretary subsequent to a classic Mario Bellini chair, to modern lighting paired with Seventeenth century furnishings, each piece performed a task in a quiet dialog between previous and current.

The exhibition began within the lobby, the place nineteenth century French “witch stones” stood subsequent to a sculptural pendant gentle by Andrea Claire Studio. Within the work room, guests had been welcomed by scent, sound, and textiles, setting the tone for the rooms that adopted. The lounge featured a mixture of vintage and modern items, resembling an 18th-century Swedish secretary, a classic Cassina chair by Mario Bellini, and sculptural espresso tables by Hadge Architects.

The eating room mixed a Gustavian centre desk, embellished with a lot of my favorite images and inside design books, and crystal chandelier with Thirties armchairs and a brand new console by Studio Khachatryan. I liked the bed room with a big Cappelen Dimyr rug underneath the Hästens mattress, a Seventeenth-century tapestry and embellished with uncommon Baroque furnishings, softly lit by Andrea Claire lighting and Studio Khachatryan’s sculptural work. It was good to satisfy Susan and her workforce and I’ll undoubtedly regulate their work. As for the photographs, I snapped just a few attempting to keep away from different guests… which is at all times a problem…
